Monopoly Gamer (2017+)

Monopoly Gamer is a mixture of the mechanics of Monopoly with elements of the Mario Universe. Some have described Gamer as a tabletop version of the Mario Party franchise.

The game ends once Go has been passed 8 times. Each pass of Go turns over a traditional Mario boss to fight. The winner is the player with the most points. Points can be earned by trading 5 coins, buying properties or defeating bosses.

When purchasing Monopoly Gamer, you get 4 characters. Each have a unique ability. The game can be expanded by purchasing additional characters in ‘Power Packs’

  • Monopoly Gamer: Mario Kart

The core mechanics remain the same as Gamer. Properties are instead race tracks from Mario Kart 8. Instead of boss fights, players roll to see who wins a ‘race’, with the highest roller taking the card.

The power-up die also has new abilities.

Monopoly Jackpot (2016)

Monopoly Jackpot has a fixed end. Once the bank has run out of 100 notes, the winner is the player with the highest stack of money.

The main new mechanic in Jackpot is the Chance Spinner (Figure 2, centre). When a player lands on Chance or rolls a Chance symbol, each player may make a wager on the Chance spin. Outcomes range from ‘X4 Pay Out’ to ‘Bankrupt’.

Monopoly Jackpot is somewhat hard to locate in shops; originally exclusive to Argos, it is now only available for purchase on re-selling websites such as eBay.

Monopoly Ultimate Banking (2016)

In Monopoly Ultimate Banking, the aim stays the same – bankrupt your opponent. However, once the first person has lost all their value, the game ends and the player with the highest net value wins the game.

In this game, all transactions are organised through a banking system (Figure 2, centre) with a barcode-style reader. Also, when a player lands on a property, the rent increases each time. This results in commonly-landed on spaces becoming very valuable.

Monopoly Here & Now World Edition (2015)

The World Edition variant is unlike other Here & Now products; to win, one must fill up their ‘passport’ with stamps. Stamps are this edition’s title deeds and the more expensive the property the larger the stamp.

The properties are holiday destinations ranging from Madrid to Hong Kong or Lima; these were decided by players in a Buzzfeed poll.

In addition, like other quick versions of Monopoly, the Sneaky Swapper returns. Rolling one of these allows you to swap your most recently bought property for another player’s stamp.

New Tokens (2015)

New colours for Chance and Here & Now cards. Board with a new lighter blue design. Four new tokens.

Monopoly Empire (2013+)

Monopoly Empire was the first of Hasbro’s major attempt to make Monopoly more accessible for a generation with less time. Its main theme is business. Players attempt to build their empire by purchasing different brands. The larger the brand, the larger the title deed is.

The winner is the first player to fill their tower to the top.

A new mechanic is added – the ‘Sneaky Swapper’. Roll one of these on your die and you may swap your latest purchase for another player’s property!

2014

After the success of the original Empire, a new version was published in 2014. The main change was the addition of 6 different tokens (see Figure 2, from the top): A Happy Meal, an Angry Bird, headphones, a Coca-Cola bottle, an Xbox controller and a car.

Also, jetBlue was removed as a property and replaced with Angry Birds and the main colour theme was changed from yellow/black to blue.

Monopoly Millionaire (2012)

Monopoly Millionaire is a more condensed version of standard Monopoly. There is no bankruptcy in this game; instead the winner is the first person to reach a cash total of a Million.

A new mechanic in Millionaire is the introduction of upgrading tokens. Once a player passes Go, they have the option to sacrifice some of their Go income to get a better token. Upgrading a token is risky though, while the opportunity to make money increases, so does the probability to lose money.

Overall Millionaire is a fun new way to play; it is also available in card-form as ‘Millionaire Deal’

Monopoly Revolution (2009)

Monopoly Revolution features all the standard properties but the layout is very different. The gameboard is circular and every quarter is split up into four different zones from ‘Walking’ to ‘Rocket’.

Revolution does not use a traditional paper bank, instead all transactions are done through the electronic unit (centre, Figure 2).

The unit also adds to the play; it can distribute chances to players with appropriate music such as Elton John’s ‘Rocket Man’ when affecting players in the Rocket zone. These pieces were later used in Zapped.

Monopoly Tropical Tycoon (2007)

Monopoly Tropical Tycoon is an early attempt to create different types of board game using the Monopoly branding.

Tropical Tycoon should be played with the interactive DVD, this includes the Chance cards called ‘News Bulletins’

Every player has a different ‘job’ which has a unique ability. Also, there are new types of building that can be erected, as opposed to the usual house and hotel. The game ends once one player goes bankrupt or after a set time. The winner is the player with the highest value of assets.

Monopoly Stock Exchange (2001)

Instead of purchasing ‘whole’ properties, players can buy shares of companies. Each company is divided into 9 parts. Once a player lands on an unowned property, they may become the ‘president’ and purchase five shares. This leaves four shares for other players to purchase. Only the player with the most shares (the President) holds the title deed and does not pay rent on that property.

Players can buy shares on their turn on any purchased properties. Shares can be sold back to the bank at any time or traded with other players.

Rent is paid directly to the bank and distributed when a player passes Go. That player receives £200 plus the rent (dividends) that their shares entitle them to.

Railways (Retail) and Utilities remain normal.

The game ends once all opponents have gone bankrupt.
