Monopoly Empire (2013+)

Monopoly Empire was the first of Hasbro’s major attempt to make Monopoly more accessible for a generation with less time. Its main theme is business. Players attempt to build their empire by purchasing different brands. The larger the brand, the larger the title deed is.

The winner is the first player to fill their tower to the top.

A new mechanic is added – the ‘Sneaky Swapper’. Roll one of these on your die and you may swap your latest purchase for another player’s property!

2014

After the success of the original Empire, a new version was published in 2014. The main change was the addition of 6 different tokens (see Figure 2, from the top): A Happy Meal, an Angry Bird, headphones, a Coca-Cola bottle, an Xbox controller and a car.

Also, jetBlue was removed as a property and replaced with Angry Birds and the main colour theme was changed from yellow/black to blue.

Monopoly Millionaire (2012)

Monopoly Millionaire is a more condensed version of standard Monopoly. There is no bankruptcy in this game; instead the winner is the first person to reach a cash total of a Million.

A new mechanic in Millionaire is the introduction of upgrading tokens. Once a player passes Go, they have the option to sacrifice some of their Go income to get a better token. Upgrading a token is risky though, while the opportunity to make money increases, so does the probability to lose money.

Overall Millionaire is a fun new way to play; it is also available in card-form as ‘Millionaire Deal’

Monopoly Junior – Card Game (Shuffle)

Monopoly Junior (Card Game) was produced by Cartamundi in 2015. It was released in the Shuffle range, and had a companion app which introduced Chance Cards.

Each player takes one of the token cards and places it in front of them. The deck is shuffled and divided into four equal piles.

On your turn, draw a card from any pile. Property cards go in front of you, money goes into your bank. Also, on your turn you may move your token to any of your properties.

If you draw a property colour which another player has their token on, you must pay rent. Change is not given. If multiple players have their token on that colour, you choose which one player to pay.

You may also pay to ‘sneak a peek’ for £1, £2 or £3. The amount paid allows you to look at the top card from 1 to 3 piles. You may then keep one of them cards as your turn, or draw from a pile not yet inspected.

The game ends when a player has three complete property sets (a set only contains two). That player is declared the winner.

Monopoly Hotels

Released: 2012

Monopoly Hotels is based on a since discontinued mobile app from EA with the same name. It is designed for two players

Each player takes a hotel base and a floor of their colour. Money is placed to the side and everyone draws £250. Every player takes five cards.

On each turn, draw two cards (five if you have zero cards) and you can use up to three actions – play a card, or pay a bill. At the end of your turn, you may only hold seven cards – discard down if needed.

Room cards are placed in empty floors. A celebrity room card cannot attract bills. Bill cards are placed into a floor in your opponent’s hotel – you cannot collect rent on that room while it remains. Build/Rent cards allow you to either build a new floor or collect rent. There are many different action cards which compliment the set.

The end of the game is reached once a player has five rooms with each room occupied, without any bills.

  • Deal Transformers (2016) [HK]
  • Deal Cities – London (2017)

Three editions were made by Cartamundi in 2017 – the last year of their production of Monopoly Deal. These editions include: London, Paris and Berlin. I have never seen a Paris or Berlin edition for sale. However, this collection includes Monopoly Deal London – which appeared to be an Amazon exclusive.

Monopoly Deal Disney

Released: 2014

Cartamundi released a Disney themed edition of Monopoly Deal. The now discontinued Shuffle App was compatible with both the standard deck and Disney deck. This edition is also valuable online due to it being out of print. Rules identical to that of Monopoly Deal – just with a Disney art work theme

Monopoly Millionaire Deal

Released: 2012

The aim of Monopoly Millionaire Deal is to bank One Million in cash, instead of the usual aim of gathering three colour Property sets. Otherwise the game plays the same.

Monopoly Millionaire Deal did not initially sell well compared to its board game counterpart – Monopoly Millionaire, released in the same year. Therefore, this card game now sells for a higher price online.

2008 – : Monopoly Deal (card game)

Monopoly Deal is a card game produced by Hasbro (Cartamundi between 2014 and 2017). The aim of the game is to collect 3 different complete colour Property sets.

How to play Monopoly Deal:

To start the game, every player takes five cards.

On your turn, you draw 2 cards and can play up to three cards from your hand. A turn can consist of adding money to your bank, adding properties to your collection or playing an Action card. You may only have 7 cards at the end of your turn – if you have an extra, you must discard down to seven.

All cards can function as cash if added to the bank. You may only ever pay debt with cards in front of you – never from your hand! There is no change allowed in the game. If you owe more money than is in your bank, you must complete the debt with properties. Otherwise, there is no trading allowed, apart from what is mandated by Action cards.

To win, collect three different property sets. All Action cards have instructions printed on them.

2014 – Morrisons Promotional Pack (Cartamundi)

In 2014, Cartamundi held the license to produce card game versions of Hasbro products. Condensed versions of these games were available for a short time at Morrisons. Customers who spent a certain amount (£20?) were given one of these games for free – Monopoly Deal was once of these.

This version has less cards than the regular Monopoly Deal. To win, one must complete only two colour property sets. Six colour groups survive – Pink, Orange, Red, Yellow, Dark Blue & Utilities. The number of Action Cards is also reduced. Although, there is a new type of Action Card – the Forced Purchase. This forces a player to sell a property at twice the purchase price.

2014 – 2017: Cartamundi Shuffle (Hard Red Case)

Cartamundi released hard case versions of Hasbro games – including Monopoly Deal. The game is otherwise identical. However, a companion app was released, which adds Chance Cards to the base game. This edition is now Out of Print with the app no longer available to download – making this game sell for over £30 online. In 2017, it was republished with a new cardboard sleeve – game remains the same.

2017 – 2024: Return to Hasbro

This is the current version of Monopoly Deal, which is still available in shops and online. The game is identical to previous releases albeit with a return to the cardboard packet. The cards also has a completely new art style.

  • 2021 reprint

Game remains unchanged – production code now 0421 (April 2021) implying there was a change during the reprint. The only difference appears to be a change in Hasbro UK address on reverse of box. Now located in Newport.
