Ms Monopoly (2019)

All properties and tokens are themed on inventions designed by women.

In this game, female players have the advantage. They start with an addition £400, and receive an extra £40 for passing Go!

Rent values can be quadrupled by purchasing a ‘headquarters’. A headquarter can only be purchased if that player owns all the properties in the colour group. The game ends when all the ‘inventions’ (properties) have been purchased. At this point, whoever is the richest player is declared the winner.

Monopoly Speed (2019)

Advertised as a Monopoly game that you’ll actually Finish. Monopoly Speed takes no longer than 10 minutes to play a complete round.

There are two phases – buying and trading. The timer advises with phase the game is currently in.

During buying phase, all players move at once. During the trading phase, deals can be done, and Chance and Community Chest cards can be played.

Monopoly Speed is also unique for having two Go spaces.

The winner is the player with the highest value of assets after 10 minutes.

Monopoly Voice Banking (2019)

There is no physical bank notes, Chance or Community Chest. Instead, everything is controlled through the ‘Top Hat’ bank unit in the centre of the board.

The game ends once one of the players goes bankrupt. Then, the player with the highest value of assets is declared by Mr Monopoly as the winner.

The ‘Top Hat’ can read Chance cards, facilitate trades and take rent.

The board is slightly shorter than a tradition set. Each colour group only has two properties in, making owning a Monopoly easier.

France – Banque Vocale

USA – Voice Banking

My version of Monopoly Voice Banking (USA) has a Spanish speaking Banking Unit. The board, box and contents are English-USA with no indication of a Spanish Banking Unit. Presumably the Banking Unit is an error.

Japanese Banking Unit Error

I also have another UK edition (identical to the first photograph – English/UK box, board, contents etc). This Banking Unit is set to Japanese. It is impossible to change the languages of these devices.

Monopoly Fortnite (2018+)

In Fortnite, players roll two dice – a regular die and an action die. Everyone starts with 15 Health Points. Once a player has lost their HP, they are out of the game.

Health Points are also the currency of the game. Rents and Properties are paid for through the HP coins.

Players can also shoot other players in front of them, costing them their HP coins. Walls can be set up to prevent this.

Whenever a player passes Go, they draw a Storm card. This makes one of the locations inaccessible

Monopoly For Millennials (2018)

There are no traditional ‘properties’ in this game. Instead, players aim to buy ‘experiences’.

The game ends when all the experiences have been purchased.

When paying rent, or when advised by Chance cards or other means, players take an experience token. These are added to the value of properties and remaining cash at the end of the game and whoever has the highest score is the winner.

It is impossible to become bankrupt in Monopoly for Millennials, if you cannot afford something, you simply don’t pay!

Monopoly Cheaters Edition (2018)

The aim of Monopoly Cheaters Edition is for players to attempt to ‘cheat’. There are many different cheats a player may perform. For example: taking another player’s hotel or stealing money from the bank. In this game, there is no dedicated banker, instead a mini-tray with everything required is passed around. Players must be extra vigilant to ensure that the person taking their turn doesn’t also steal. If, however, someone is caught, then they are immediately sent to jail and must attach the handcuffs provided.

USA – BONUS pack

In addition to the standard USA contents of Monopoly Cheaters Edition – this game includes 3 extra ‘Cash themed’ tokens. The Sack of Money featured in Monopoly sets in the USA between 1999 and 2008, while the other two tokens were unsuccessful candidates in the 2017 Token Madness vote.

This BONUS! pack also introduces a new mechanic to Monopoly Cheaters Edition – the Counterfeit Money Pack. These are notes which should be shuffled into bank. These notes are clearly marked with COUNTERFEIT. They can be used as normal Monopoly notes but are not counted into the final scores at the end of the game.

Monopoly Gamer (2017+)

Monopoly Gamer is a mixture of the mechanics of Monopoly with elements of the Mario Universe. Some have described Gamer as a tabletop version of the Mario Party franchise.

The game ends once Go has been passed 8 times. Each pass of Go turns over a traditional Mario boss to fight. The winner is the player with the most points. Points can be earned by trading 5 coins, buying properties or defeating bosses.

When purchasing Monopoly Gamer, you get 4 characters. Each have a unique ability. The game can be expanded by purchasing additional characters in ‘Power Packs’

  • Monopoly Gamer: Mario Kart

The core mechanics remain the same as Gamer. Properties are instead race tracks from Mario Kart 8. Instead of boss fights, players roll to see who wins a ‘race’, with the highest roller taking the card.

The power-up die also has new abilities.

Monopoly Jackpot (2016)

Monopoly Jackpot has a fixed end. Once the bank has run out of 100 notes, the winner is the player with the highest stack of money.

The main new mechanic in Jackpot is the Chance Spinner (Figure 2, centre). When a player lands on Chance or rolls a Chance symbol, each player may make a wager on the Chance spin. Outcomes range from ‘X4 Pay Out’ to ‘Bankrupt’.

Monopoly Jackpot is somewhat hard to locate in shops; originally exclusive to Argos, it is now only available for purchase on re-selling websites such as eBay.

Monopoly Ultimate Banking (2016)

In Monopoly Ultimate Banking, the aim stays the same – bankrupt your opponent. However, once the first person has lost all their value, the game ends and the player with the highest net value wins the game.

In this game, all transactions are organised through a banking system (Figure 2, centre) with a barcode-style reader. Also, when a player lands on a property, the rent increases each time. This results in commonly-landed on spaces becoming very valuable.

Monopoly Here & Now World Edition (2015)

The World Edition variant is unlike other Here & Now products; to win, one must fill up their ‘passport’ with stamps. Stamps are this edition’s title deeds and the more expensive the property the larger the stamp.

The properties are holiday destinations ranging from Madrid to Hong Kong or Lima; these were decided by players in a Buzzfeed poll.

In addition, like other quick versions of Monopoly, the Sneaky Swapper returns. Rolling one of these allows you to swap your most recently bought property for another player’s stamp.

New Tokens (2015)

New colours for Chance and Here & Now cards. Board with a new lighter blue design. Four new tokens.
