Hasbro and Panini Collaborate to Create MONOPOLY Prizm – Monopoly & Trading Card Crossover

Hasbro and Panini have revealed MONOPOLY PRIZM – a board game & trading card crossover due for launch 16 April 2023, initially time-exclusive to Target, with a full release on 1 August 2023. The game is expected to be a North American exclusive.

MONOPOLY Prizm makes use of Panini’s license to make Trading Cards for the NBA. The board game itself includes a Starter Pack and 2 ‘Prizm’ Packs. Individual MONOPOLY Prizm packs will be sold separately. It has been stated that this venture comes after two years of design and planning.

Gameplay

Players act as their favourite NBA basketball coach as they seek to recruit players to take control of NBA games and collect points. The base set is comprised of 90 cards of some of NBA’s Star Players and Top Rookies. Special and Rare MONOPOLY Prizm inserts and Monopoly Boardwalk parallels can be found in Monopoly Prizm: NBA Booster Boxes – specifically designed to enhance gameplay.

The three main mechanics of the board game itself are Drafting, Trading and Competing.

Players Draft their squad of NBA player Prizm cards. Players then Trade cards to build and improve their squad. Finally, players Compete in 1:1 matches to win All-Star Cards (which occurs as the player passes GO). Instead of buying properties, players try to control NBA games and collect ‘rent’ of bonus points when opposition players lands on them. To earn further points, players compare the states of their Prizm cards when competing in ‘Playmaker Challenges’ and ‘All-Star Contests’. The winner is the coach with the most points.

Hasbro Statement

“Based on fan insights, we noticed a unique crossover opportunity between individuals who love classic gameplay and card collecting, which ultimately lit the spark to create and bring this innovative trading card element to Monopoly, We’re ecstatic to have partnered with Panini, one of the top sports card companies, to power this new Monopoly edition through the utilization of authentic trading cards, real player statistics, and collectible card packs to expand the game.” – Adam Biehl, SVP & General Manager, Hasbro Gaming

This would also be MONOPOLY’s first Crossover game since the 2019 MONOPOLY JENGA game

Finance (Board Game) – Monopoly History

In 1932, The Fascinating Game of Finance (later named to just Finance) was released onto the market by Dan Layman, who had played a variant of The Landlord’s Game.

Finance board game

Finance was remarkably similar to Monopoly, despite being created three years prior to Parker Brother’s Monopoly hitting the shelves.

After being sold for a year in Indianapolis, Indiana through L.S. Ayres, the rights were purchased by Knapp Electric for $200 and would be purchased once again by Parker Brothers in 1935 for $10,000 – Parker Brothers required the rights of the game to strengthen their patent on Monopoly as the two games were very similar.

Before the granting of Monopoly’s patent – US2026082A, Parker Brothers created Fortune – a game very similar to Monopoly but without Charles Darrow’s contributions – using their rights to publish Finance. Apart from losing the traditional Atlantic City property names, Darrow’s illustrations were also dropped. Moreover, Hotels were also removed and instead players were allowed to build up to five houses. As well as spaces being coloured – groups were allocated symbols. Prices, rent values and house costs remain similar to Monopoly. Even Chance and Community Chest cards remain.

Only 10,000 editions were produced as the Monopoly patent was later granted and this ‘insurance policy’ of Fortune was no longer required. The game once reproduced later as Finance and Fortune to ensure the Fortune trademark remained value and later Finance once again as Parker Brothers used the Fortune name for their new Marble game. The game of Finance, Fortune or Finance and Fortune was discontinued after 1962.

Leeds Monopoly 500 Limited Edition

In 1989, Waddingtons released a limited edition print run of Monopoly with only 500 sets being produced. This version of Monopoly replaces the traditional London streets with those from around the city of Leeds – an idea that was unique at the time and later inspired multiple city based Monopoly from the late 1990s. All profits generated from the sale went towards the Lord Mayor of Leeds‘ (Cllr Les Carter) appeal. Each set has a unique seal of authenticity with number (from 1 to 500) with The Lord Mayor owning Set #1.

Board:

The properties are as followed: Burmantofts, Sheepscar, Chapeltown Road, Regent Street, North Street, Great George St, Woodhouse Lane, Cookridge Street, Eastgate, The Calls, Kirkgate, Boar Lane, Wellington Street, City Square, Vicar Lane, The Headrow, Briggate, Albion Street, Lands Lane, Commercial Street, East Parade and finally Park Row. The stations are: City Station, Crossgate Station, Horsforth Station & New Pudsey Station; and the utilities: Yorkshire Electricity & Yorkshire Water.

“A LIMITED edition charity version of the world-famous Monopoly has proved a huge sell-out success for Leeds manufacturers Waddingtons. The 500 sets, using Leeds place names instead of London ones, were all snapped up within two hours of going on sale yesterday, leaving many people disappointed. Long queues had already formed outside the firm’s Rothwell premises when the doors opened at 8.45am.

The demand is such that Waddingtons boss Mr Victor Watson is consider producing another print run of the Leeds edition, with profits going towards the Lord Mayor of Leed’s appeal. However, he faces a dilemma because he is anxious not to upset those people who have already paid out £25 for a limited edition item.

‘Perhaps I should have set a higher price on the limited edition or produced some more, but we have still raised over £10,000 for charity’ he said.”

Collection

Number 333/500 is included in this collection.

The contents, board and box are identical to that of Monopoly sets produced from 1987 to 1993 (apart from the Leeds theme).

Contents

Two sets have sold recently. On the 5th January 2023, #192 sold for £190.50. #333 sold for £103.58. Another set (#244) is available for £180 (or best offer). However, The Mirror (in 2006) claimed that one set has sold at auction as much as £1,650.
