Chicago (1995) – US Equities Realty Inc (Happy New Year 1996)

This is the 1995 version of Monopoly Chicago Edition. Instead of the standard tokens, it has eight custom designed tokens. It also includes a sticker on the box and board stating that this is a gift from US Equities Realty Inc.

We hope that you will enjoy this limited edition of the world’s most famous board game. We have customized a small number of the new Chicago Edition of Monopoly by creating special tokens (the pieces used to mark your space on the board) of well-known Chicago landmarks: John Hancock Centre, the Picasso, Chicago Union Station, the Stone Container Building at 150 North Michigan Avenue, the old Chicago Water Tower, One Financial Place, 676 North Michigan Avenue, and the Harold Washington Library. US Equities has been privileged to be involved in the management, leasing or development of many of these buildings.

Similar miniature building replicas produced in the early 1930s and 1940s have recently become very popular collectors’ items – we hope that these will also.

We hope you and your family enjoy playing your limited edition Chicago Monopoly as much as we enjoyed creating it and we wish you a prosperous and healthy 1996

Monopoly – UK Cities & Towns

Monopoly has also been released for a number of different locations. The majority of major towns and cities have seen at least one Monopoly release in the last twenty years. these editions are usually produced by Winning Moves.

There are three designs of these editions – traditional, modern and special token. Traditional boxes look alike, with modern boxes with a redesigned box cover – modern editions also come with a free promotional Top Trumps Card. Special Token editions are similar to modern editions, except there are 6 special tokens instead of the standard tokens.

Monopoly U-Build (2009 – 2010)

All properties are renamed to the set used in Monopoly City.

The rules remain the same, bankrupt your opponent. However, the main difference is the new board. The gameboard is fully customisable. The game can be played on a much smaller scale or it can be played like a full game.

In addition, Chance spaces have changed and are now bridges. When crossing a bridge, you must then raise it. To cross a raised bridge, a player must pay £1 Million.

The new City buildings also return again.

World Cup (1998+)

Monopoly editions have so far been produced for four World Cups (1998, 2006, 2010, 2018). The 2002 World Cup did not see a Monopoly release. 2014 World Cup appears to be exclusive to Brazil. A video game version of the 1998 World Cup Monopoly was also released (logged lower down).

  • 1998

The base of the box is designed like a football pitch. It can be used as a dice tray

  • 2006

Chance and Community cards are replaced, in favour of Manager and Referee cards. This is different to the 1998’s cards which were Home and Away.

3 of the tokens return: ball, whistle and goal. The main token is the ‘golden boot’, which as its name suggests has a gold colour, compared to the regular grey for the other pieces.

  • 2010

Chance and Community cards are replaced, in favour of Half Time and Full Time cards. This is different to the 1998’s cards which were Home and Away and to the 2006’s cards of Manager and Referee.

Green stands and Red Stadiums replace the Houses and Hotels.

None of the sport themed tokens remain in this edition, instead the traditional 8 tokens are included.

  • 2018

This edition is in dual-language: English and Russian.

The 2018 World Cup edition has some differences compared to the previous versions. Firstly, most of the 1998 World Cup tokens have returned with a special 2018 mascot token.

Secondly, the Chance and Community Chest cards have been replaced by Full Time and Half Time.

Finally, the football-shaped dice haven’t returned.

It is also interesting to note, that no ‘Speed Die’ has been included and the relevant page in the rules has been replaced.

  • 1998 World Cup – PC Big Box

Monopoly Cash Decoder / Crooked Cash (2021)

Released as Crooked Cash in the US Market.

The game has some slight differences compared with traditional Monopoly. There are 4 fewer spaces and only hotels are used. In addition, there are ‘fake’ money notes and Chance Cards.

When money is traded hands, any player can ‘inspect’ one note from the transaction (any player can inspect twice per lap of the board). If the note is fake, the inspector keeps the note and adds it to their reserves. If it real, play continues. Chance Cards can also be inspected in the same way – except the reward is £100.

The game ends when all properties have been purchased, the player with the most cash (real or fake) wins the game.

Monopoly For Sore Losers (2020)

Players collect ‘Sore Loser’ coins whenever they have to perform an unpopular action – such as paying rent, paying tax or landing on your own property.

When a player has 4 coins, they can return them to the bank to become Mr Monopoly. As Mr Monopoly, the rules are different. Instead of paying rent, you take the money from the owner. Landing on the same square as another player will trap them – taking a property from them and preventing them from moving next turn. This power lasts until someone else cashes in 4 coins. The game ends when everyone returns to Go after all properties have been purchases, or if everyone else is bankrupt. The player with the highest value of assets wins.
